The shadow of a stalled government looms over a weary nation as the great gears of our democracy once again grind to a halt. This is not the result of a natural disaster or a foreign threat, but a man-made crisis born in the marble halls of our own capital.
I am reminded of the times Congress stood as the moral arbiter for the American worker:
- The 1930s: An outraged Congress moved against corporations paying sub-poverty wages, passing the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. They correctly identified “callous disregard” for workers as a stain on the nation.
- 1991–1992: Congress intervened to force the railroad industry to accept fair wage contracts, ensuring the economy didn’t collapse on the backs of unpaid laborers.
- 2002: Congress rightfully branded Enron an “evil employer” for robbing its employees of their 401(k) funds and their futures.
- 2020: Congress mandated that the airline industry protect its workers through the Payroll Support Program, ensuring paychecks continued despite a global standstill.
In those moments, Congress was right to look after private employees. But today, I ask: Congress, will you look in the mirror? You once branded any employer who withholds wages as “evil.” By your own historical standard, what does that make you today?
As of this April 1st, 2026, the American people find themselves spectators to a political theater that has taken a turn for the dark and the desperate. In the corridors of power, the spirit of compromise has been replaced by the cold, hard steel of partisanship. We see a troubling new breed of politics: of the party, for the party, and forever the party. The common good has been left on the cutting room floor.
The casualties of this deadlock are not the politicians in their comfortable offices, but the men and women who keep the pulse of this country beating—the federal employees. From Coast Guard watchmen on our frigid shores to TSA officers at our busy hubs, these loyal public servants are being told to work without the basic dignity of a paycheck.
There is callousness in this disregard that borders on the reckless. To treat the lives and livelihoods of nearly two million dedicated citizens as mere bargaining chips is a betrayal of the trust we place in our leaders. It is a cynical calculation that prizes the survival of a political brand over the survival of the American family.
When the loyalty of the employee is met with the indifference of the congressional master, the foundation of our civic contract begins to crumble. History will look back on this hour and ask: When did the pursuit of power become more important than the people it was meant to serve?
