The Future may not include the FERS Supplement

Federal Benefit Advisory

The high stakes talk on Capitol Hill about axing the FERS retirement bridge comes down to a direct hit on the wallet for a hard working federal and postal employee. Over the last ten years, lawmakers have tried a total of six times to kill this special supplement, which acts as a financial bridge to carry early retirees over until their regular Social Security checks kick in at age 62. The closest they ever came to pulling it off was during the 119th (2025-2026) Congress, when a massive budget bill cleared the first house of Congress by a razor-thin 215-to-214 vote. While the other house eventually stepped in and killed the cuts, the close call shows that when the same political team holds a majority in both houses and the President signs the bill, the bridge will likely be knocked out for good.

If past bills are any guide, a future law would draw a sharp line in the sand, setting a firm cutoff date to determine who gets paid and who gets left behind. In the 119th Congress’s draft, that line was set for January 1, 2028. Anyone hanging up their tools before that date would be safely grandfathered in under the traditional rules. But the rules get very messy for a hard working federal and postal employee who accepted a buyout or an early retirement package (a VERA) at age 50, planning to wait until their Minimum Retirement Age of 56 or 57 to start collecting the bridge checks.

Under the strict wording of that budget bill, the government only protects people who are already actively eligible to get the money before the deadline. Because a worker who retires at age 50 cannot legally touch the supplement until they hit their MRA years down the road, they would be completely cut out if that birthday falls after the deadline. They would face a brutal seven-year income gap with zero bridge money. While union pushbacks thankfully saved the benefit this time around, the lesson for anyone looking to retire early is that their future security remains entirely up for question.
